Situated about 30 miles west of Williamsburg and 30 miles east of Richmond in King William County, Virginia, Historic Chelsea is an outdoor waterfront venue that provides the elegance of a historic estate with a twist of rustic charm. With 600 acres, Historic Chelsea can accommodate as many as 300 guests for a celebration under the stars or a more intimate cocktail-style affair.
Built in 1709, Historic Chelsea boasts much of the same architecture today that it did more than 300 years ago. Guests may find themselves walking our waterfront property in the footsteps of General Marquis de Lafayette who camped at Chelsea during the Battle of Yorktown, or entering a room once visited by George Washington or Thomas Jefferson.
At Historic Chelsea, you have the flexibility to add your personal touch to your waterfront event. While we're happy to supply a preferred vendor list, we welcome you to tie the knot your way! Choose your own caterer and other vendors - or DIY - because nobody can tell your story better than you.
We are a family-owned and operated event and wedding venue and pride ourselves on providing personal service in a relaxed atmosphere so you can take your time preparing for and celebrating your special day.
With breathtaking views of the Mattaponi River, the bridal suite provides ample space for the bride and her attendants to prepare in historic style. The wood-paneled room is outfitted with beautiful antiques, including a Colonial four poster bed and romantic chaise lounge.
Overlooking the Mattaponi River, the groom's quarters are enveloped in warm wood paneling and boast a wood-burning fireplace. The groom's quarters are also furnished with elegant antiques that provide a comfortable, charming space for wedding preparations.
Once used as a parlor to impress and entertain guests, the drawing room provides the wedding party and close family an opportunity to gather before making their way down the aisle.
The cozy warmth of the library lends itself to be a perfect spot for final well wishes before the ceremony begins.
Flanked by doors overlooking the lawn, the formal dining room provides an elegant space beneath the twinkling lights of a crystal chandelier for refreshments before the ceremony begins.
Handmade farmhouse tables crafted from barn wood at Historic Chelsea are available for rent, as well as wine barrels and other rustic decor.
